Full Description
This singing bird box is in superb condition considering it was made circa 1880. Housed in a premium cost Tortoise shell case, the mechanisms perform flawlessly as the bird, with real Nightingale feathers, pops up from under the hand painted eperculum (lid), to perform its bird song, while turning left and right, flapping its wings, moving its ivory beak and then returning to the mechanical interior when the performance has finished. There is a compartment built into the back of the case with hinged flap to cover the powder snuff (tobacco) that was often carried there. The box measures 4" by 2.75" by 1.5" high. The later made transit case measures 6" by 5.5" by 3.5".
